Movie hype: Joker!

The reasons you should be looking forward to the new movie by Todd Phillips.

Joker first appeared in the debut issue of the Batman comic book in 1940 and, since, he has become one of the most well-known supervillains in history. Over time this character changed from a lunatic and prankster thief to a wicked psychopath and criminal mastermind, depending on the authors. His past, except for a few comic book series, has been purposely kept obscure, till today: a proper origin story that launches a new series of standalone releases based on the DC universe.

“ All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy. That's how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day.” Alan Moore - The killing joke

The movie director revealed that Alan Moore's work inspired the film basis; in the comic book the Joker, who turned a psychopath after a life of failures and the loss of his wife, wants to prove that anyone, even decent and sane people, can turn mad following dramatic events.

So the premise is quite exciting, but why you should be looking forward to the movie?

Not a true comic book movie.

Well, it is still a comic book character, the city is Gotham, and the Wayne family is way too important to pretend they are not there. But this movie is more a psychological thriller, it is about suffering, with little twists in the musical and comedy genres, rather than the usual comic book movies we get used to watching nowadays.

It is about the journey, not the destination.

Everyone knows already how the movie ends because we all know who the Joker is. Nevertheless, everything is still so charming that we want to know the psychological, social and unjust events that bring one person, as one of us, to the breakpoint.

The scary laugh!

If you saw the trailer, you must admit that the Joker's laugh, a recurring tic probably due to the character frustration, is so disturbing and also so appropriate to the Joker portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix. A possible oscar? We will see.

The film is due to release on the 4th of October in the UK.
